STEP BY STEP METHOD
How to prevent a disaster that happens when you buy furniture here and there, now and later? It may seem easy, but I know quite a few desperate owners who furnished their homes this way and the result was… Well, not pleasant for the eye nor for the soul.
When we buy furniture and home equipment and we do not have a completely clear picture of what exactly we want, what we really need, what pieces we are looking for, we can quickly lose the red thread when shopping and at the same time designing a space. In addition, we often shop impulsively without first thinking (or admitting) whether an individual piece of furniture will fit nicely into the whole story of the space.
How to deal with your own shopping project so that in the end it doesn’t look like you dragged the furniture home from 16 different stores (even if you did)? Follow this easy step-by-step trick.

1 | FIND THAT GLUE
Creating a cohesive look is basically about finding THAT GLUE, that holds the individual elements together. In interior design “the glue” can be color, material, furniture leg style, etc.
2 | START BY BROWSING THE WEBSITES
Start by browsing the websites of the selected stores (eg. IKEA and JYSK). It is important to INITIALLY LIMIT YOURSELF to looking for LARGER PIECES (sofas, dining tables, bed frames…). SAVE all the cute pieces in your PINTEREST BOARD!
3 | SEARCH FOR SIMILAR FEATURES
Now open your Pinterest board. SEARCH FOR SIMILAR FEATURES and things that fit nicely together by color, material, style, vibe.
4 | MAKE A SELECTION
Make a selection of your FAVORITE ITEMS and check (again) if they fit in your room. DERIVE A COLOR PALETTE from the selected elements.
5 | SELECT COMPLEMENTARY ELEMENTS
Now that you have the base, CHOOSE OTHER ELEMENTS THAT MATCH BIGGER PIECES. Start with larger pieces like chairs, side tables, lamps, rugs. And continue with smaller like cushions, wall clocks, art, vases etc.
6 | MAKE A SHOPPING LIST
Now make a shopping list, check the delivery times, and try to coordinate your purchases so that all the pieces arrive at your address at about the same time.
7 | CONGRATULATIONS FOR A WELL DONE SHOPPING
Congratulate yourself on a job well done and enjoy the things that surround you.
